Ten of Wands tarot card from the Simply Tarot deck

Ten of Wands Tarot Card Meaning

The Burdened One
Burden • Responsibility • Exhaustion

The Ten of Wands shows that you are over burdened from taking on too much. You need to reassess your situation and prioritise your to-do-list. You will need to relinquish some of your responsibilities; there is only so much you can do alone.

The Subject has taken on more than they can chew and they’re feeling overloaded. At the culmination of the Wands journey, there should be a lot to celebrate about - something has been established - but the subject can't see this because it is too much of a burden. Despite the success of having achieved what they set out to do, something now needs to 'give'; and, moving forward, the Subject needs to weigh up what they take on, against their capacity to actually do it.

The Subject may also feel overwhelmed by someone else’s troubles and upset; they may be feeling, in some way, responsible for it, or that they should, but are unable, to assist. The Subject may want to help but they are too involved to see clearly what needs to be done. This card may nudge them to stand back a little in order to observe the situation objectively in order to find a way to help.

Love & Relationships

Emotional labour has become uneven. One person may be carrying the weight of responsibility, reassurance or effort almost entirely alone, slowly turning affection into exhaustion. Love cannot thrive forever beneath the strain of unspoken imbalance.

Material Life

Responsibility has become overwhelming. Work, obligations or emotional labour pile so heavily upon the shoulders that stability itself begins turning into exhaustion rather than safety. Some burdens were never meant to be carried alone.

Notes from the Artist

Ten Wands stand in a circle of fire that flickers and moves with energy. Some of the Wands seem chopped and restricted in terms of growth, and some of the Wands seem overpowering. Whilst the Wands are not the same height, they are holding fast, being rooted in the ground and could absolutely grow to perfection. Perhaps, the old adage of 'You can't see the woods for the trees' is apt for this image because it is easy to focus more on what is not right than how well things are actually going in the main.
