01 - Situation
The card in this position draws attention to the heart of the matter and the central issue being explored. While it won't reveal every aspect of the situation on its own, it provides the focal point around which the rest of the reading is built.
This card should be used as a reference point throughout the reading. As each additional card is interpreted, consider how it supports, challenges, influences or expands upon the situation shown here. A clear understanding of this position will often make the rest of the spread easier to interpret.
02 - Conflict
The card in this position highlights the challenge, tension or opposing influence affecting the situation shown in the first card. In many readings, it helps to clarify the central issue by revealing where resistance, uncertainty or conflict is arising.
Readers often find that people can identify more readily with a specific challenge than with a broad description of their situation. For this reason, the Conflict card can provide valuable context when the Situation card feels unclear. If there is uncertainty about the first position, consider how this card relates to it and whether it helps bring the underlying issue into sharper focus.
03 - Mind
This position reflects the Subject's thoughts, perceptions and beliefs about the situation. It is important to remember that thoughts are often shaped by interpretation rather than objective fact.
Readers should compare this card with positions that reflect what is actually happening, particularly the Situation, Conflict and Now cards. Differences between these positions can reveal misunderstandings, assumptions, unnecessary worries or areas where the Subject may not be seeing the situation clearly.
This insight can help put the Subject's mind at ease or, conversely, encourage them to think more carefully about the consequences of their actions and decisions.
For example, if the Nine of Swords appeared in the Mind position while the surrounding cards were largely positive, it might suggest that the Subject is worrying excessively about something that is unlikely to be as difficult or damaging as they fear.
04 - Driver
This position reveals how the Subject arrived at their current situation. It highlights the influences, motivations, experiences or events that have shaped their journey and may explain why they are responding to circumstances in a particular way.
The Driver is often one of the most important cards in the spread because it provides context for everything else. Understanding what has motivated the Subject can help unlock the deeper meaning behind the reading and reveal patterns that might otherwise be overlooked.
For example, a painful or disappointing experience may have led the Subject towards self-doubt, caution or self-destructive behaviour. Recognising that influence can be the first step towards accepting it and moving forward. Equally, a positive card in this position may remind the Subject of the enthusiasm, ambition or sense of purpose that inspired them to begin a journey in the first place, helping them reconnect with their original motivation.
05 - Past
This position highlights people, experiences, situations or influences from the past that continue to affect the Subject today. These may be positive lessons and strengths, or unresolved issues that are still shaping their thoughts, decisions and behaviour.
For example, if the Subject was hurt significantly in a previous relationship, they may fear experiencing the same pain again, making it difficult to trust or fully commit to a new one. Equally, this position may remind the Subject of lessons they have already learned and skills they have already developed that could be valuable in their current situation.
When interpreting this card, consider not only what happened in the past, but how those experiences continue to influence the present and shape the choices available now.
06 - Future
This position offers a glimpse of the most likely direction of events if the current situation continues along its present course. It highlights influences that are beginning to emerge and developments that may come to shape the Subject's experience in the near future.
It is important to remember that the future depicted by the Tarot is not fixed. If the Subject changes their thoughts, attitudes or behaviour as a result of the insight gained from the reading, the outcome is likely to change as well. For this reason, the Future card should be viewed as a guide rather than a prediction.
Readers may find it helpful to compare the Future card with the Past position. Together, these cards can reveal whether the Subject has moved forward from previous experiences, repeated old patterns, or begun a new chapter altogether.
07 - Now
This is a current-position card, but unlike the Situation and Conflict cards, it focuses on the Subject rather than the circumstances surrounding them. It reflects their present attitude, emotional state and approach to the situation.
Comparing this card with the Situation, Conflict and Driver positions can provide valuable insight into how the Subject is responding to events. It may reveal confidence, uncertainty, satisfaction, frustration or any number of emotional influences that are shaping their decisions and behaviour.
This position often highlights a difference between reality and perception. For example, the surrounding cards may indicate a positive situation with opportunities for growth, but if the Ten of Wands appeared here, it could suggest that the Subject feels burdened, overwhelmed or trapped despite the positive circumstances around them.
When this happens, the Reader should explore why the Subject feels this way and whether there are practical or emotional changes that could help them move forward more positively.
08 - Others
This position reflects the people, influences and environment surrounding the Subject. It can reveal how others view the situation, what advice they may offer, and how external opinions are shaping the Subject's experience.
While the Subject should not allow criticism, negativity or the expectations of others to dictate their choices, it is often valuable to consider alternative viewpoints. The people around us can sometimes see things that we overlook or provide insights that help us better understand a situation.
When interpreting this card, consider what influence other people are having on the Subject and whether their perspective offers something useful. Does this card reveal support, opposition, guidance or misunderstanding? Could it help the Subject see the situation from a different angle?
09 - Hopes
This position reveals what the Subject hopes will happen, and sometimes what they fear may happen. The Reader should consider whether these hopes or fears are realistic or exaggerated, and how they relate to the Subject's current situation. This is an important position because, when read alongside the Situation and Driver cards, it can reveal whether the Subject is following a path that is likely to lead towards their desired outcome.
Understanding a person's hopes and fears is often key to understanding their wider objective. If the reading suggests that the Subject's current circumstances are no longer meeting their needs, or that they have become disconnected from what truly matters to them, a Chakra Reading may provide additional insight. By exploring their inner motivations and emotional state more deeply, the Subject may gain greater clarity and confidence in pursuing a path that supports both their own needs and those of the people around them.
10 - Outcome
This position represents the most likely outcome if the current situation continues along its present course. It is the natural conclusion of the influences, attitudes and circumstances revealed throughout the reading.
It is important to remember that this card is not a fixed prediction of the future. Rather, it reflects where the Subject is likely to arrive if they continue to think, feel and act in the same way. If new choices are made or circumstances change, the outcome may change as well.
For many people, this is one of the most significant cards in the spread because it encourages reflection and personal responsibility. Tarot can help illuminate the road ahead, but it is ultimately the Subject who chooses which path to follow.
When interpreting this position, consider how it relates to the cards in the Past, Now and Future positions. What lessons from the past are influencing the present? What opportunities exist to change direction? Does the outcome reflect the future the Subject hopes for, or suggest a different course of action may be needed?
The Outcome card reminds us that the future is shaped by the choices we make today. The insights gained from the reading should therefore be used not only to understand what may happen, but also to decide what kind of future the Subject wishes to create.
