Page of Cups tarot card from the Simply Tarot deck

Page of Cups Tarot Card Meaning

The Lovelorn
Sensitivity • Imagination • Vulnerability

The Page of Cups is the card of sensitivity. A painful experience or the breakdown of a previous relationship left you lacking confidence. If you want a relationship you need to heal past hurt. To be able to love someone else you must first love yourself. When you have mastered this you will find yourself attracting the attention you crave.

As with the Ace, the Page of Cups can show that the Subject hopes for some companionship and attention. Perhaps they feel rueful and lonely, but they may be looking in all the wrong places. The Subject is really not quite ready for a true emotional encounter because they are still affected by some hurt, or upsetting emotional experience, from the past.

The Reader should work with the Subject to understand what is holding them back. Only by gaining true understanding of why they can't move forward, will their opportunities begin to change for the better.

It could be that the Subject is infatuated with someone, or fixed on an unrealistic relationship, and they may not understand why the relationship is not developing the way they want it to. They may be rather demanding, too needy or childish in their approach to this situation. But, at the heart of this, is a genuine desire for a real relationship. Leaving the past behind, looking at their own wants and needs, and being ready to receive and give love maturely and equally will be the answer to finding true love.

Love & Relationships

Sensitivity runs close to the surface. Affection may arrive shyly, awkwardly or through small emotional gestures that reveal far more than dramatic declarations ever could. The heart often speaks first through softness rather than certainty.

Material Life

Emotional openness begins reshaping practical life quietly. Someone is learning how sensitivity, creativity and vulnerability can coexist alongside responsibility rather than undermine it completely. Stability grows differently once the heart is no longer treated like an inconvenience to survival.

Notes from the Artist

A Page is a messenger or apprentice to the Court Royals and Knights. They represent immaturity - perhaps like a young teenager or even a child. They can be quite unrealistic. This Page of Cups kneels at the edge of a pool seemingly performing a specific task he has been given. However he stares at himself in the reflection of the water (we wonder what he is thinking about - demonstrating distraction or dreaming). He seems to be sad and is reluctant to set down his Cup (representing love and/or emotion) to demonstrate he is holding on to, or holding back, something). A crescent moon shines some dim light suggesting things are not clear (he must understand more before he can achieve want he wants). This Page represents a person who would like a relationship but cannot understand why it is not happening. Their naivety around love and relationships needs to be addressed.
