Five of Cups tarot card from the Simply Tarot deck

Five of Cups Tarot Card Meaning

The Heartbroken
Grief • Loss • Regret

Sadly, the Five of Cups shows you’re upset as a result of difficulty, or separation within a relationship. Your attitude and mind-set aren’t helping you to feel any better. The situation seems unsolvable but if you stop focussing on the negatives and instead attend to healing the rift there is hope for resolution.

The Subject is feeling sad and down because they’re having problems in a key relationship. They may feel that the argument or disagreement is going to force the relationship to an end, or have some long term impact or affect. The Subject is sad because they feel as if the innocence and purity of what they felt has now been tarnished or spoiled.

All is not lost, and there is still room for remorse and forgiveness on both parts. It is not realistic to think that any kind of relationship will always be happy and easy. It doesn’t make the relationship any less real or important. If the Subject truly wants this relationship they’ll need to make the necessary effort to mend things.

Love & Relationships

Grief lingers heavily here. A relationship may carry disappointment, regret or the painful awareness that something once cherished no longer exists in the same form. The heart heals slowly when it keeps staring at what has been lost instead of what still remains.

Material Life

Loss leaves visible emptiness behind. Grief, disappointment or emotional exhaustion make it difficult to trust stability again after something important has already fallen away. The hardest part of rebuilding often begins after the crisis itself has already passed.

Notes from the Artist

The tree's foliage and blooms are wilting and growing weak. Two Cups at the top have water flowing in separate streams which miss the two Cups below completely. One of the Cups has fallen from the tree and is now in the pool below. Even the star, continuing to give light and nurturing seems unable to help the situation. Emotional energy is low and there is trouble keeping this tree of Cups alive and thriving.
